When it comes to movies, I wonder how people enjoy horror movies. I have only watched one of the Saw series, and that day I knew I was never going to watch a horror movie again. Thrillers aren’t bad at all, just that I often find myself toggling to the end, because it is not fiction suspense that will kill me. Comedy, not so much. Romantic stuff are just cheesy. I do love documentaries though.

But nothing tops action movies for me. I can vividly remember Infinity wars, when Thor leaped into the sky with his hammer, and there was all this lightening around him…that was epic! That day, the whole room went wild, where I watched it. I can remember when in High school, movies were projected on the Pickard-Parker house wall, on some Saturday entertainments. The fight scenes always had us screaming in excitement and giving our own sound effects.

We know that for the Nigerian action movies, the action is mainly spiritual. We won’t go into that. Indian movies are on another level! For starters, they are long. And the abilities of the heroes are god-level. Then we have the Chinese movies. The person who thought to create heroes who can walk in the air and fight should be jailed! I still do not know if kung fu, tai chi and all those fight things are real or products of someone’s imagination. Jet Li of course, is my favorite Chinese actor. Then we have the American movies with awesome effects and some really nicely coordinated side effects. Of course, we have the ridiculous ones like Matrix and Wanted. Bullets that can go in circles. Really?!

All action movies depict a hero, and maybe that’s what does it for me. There is some trouble, and this extraordinary individual steps onto the scene and fights, rescuing people. The hero is usually the protagonist or blowman, and the antagonist is mostly the villain or the killer. (Yeah, the blowman and killer terms just unlocked some deep memories).

One time I was wondering to myself what it was like when Jesus died and descended into the lower parts of the earth. That must have been one epic show. I wonder if Jesus went cobra kung fu style on the devil and his people. I wonder if he fought them like John Wick fights, with absolute precision and finesse! I’m sure it was more like a Chuck Norris because Chuck is Chuck. I mean we know for a fact that a cobra once bit Chuck Norris and it died after 5 days. Covid was exposed to Chuck Norris and Covid had to go into quarantine for 2 weeks. Death too once had a near-Chuck-Norris experience, and death gave his life to Christ afterwards.

We may sadly never know the details of the epic scenes that happened when Jesus died and descended into the lower parts of the earth. We do know however, that scripture says in Colossians 2:15, “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” That works for me. My captain utterly vanquished the enemy and defeated him in a way that he can never recover. And no action super-hero sequence can beat this true story for me.

And in the same way we do not know how Jesus defeated the devil on the cross, we may never know how some battles we fight will be won. But we are assured of victory, because by believing in Jesus, we partner with him in his death and resurrection. Hallelujah! Glory to God! The how will definitely unfold. Probably unpredictable, but epic nonetheless. And we will share the testimony, all to his glory.
