I know this for a fact, and it’s not because I am afraid of heights. Yes, my fear of heights is so bad, when I go three storeys high, I cannot look down. I’m not trying to say my fear of heights is so real that even God must be scared of heights. If that were the case, God would be scared of rats and loud noises.
I’ve always been fascinated by the greeting of angels, “Fear not”. Maybe their appearance is quite frightening so they have to issue a disclaimer of sorts. But more terrifying than their presence is the message they carry. More terrifying than the presence of Gabriel, was the message he carried saying, “Your child will be the savior of the world.” Do you have the parenting skills needed to raise the savior of the world? I don’t think so. Mary, when Jesus was born, went to the temple with him and lost him for 3 days! Bad parenting. Of course she was going to be scared, because she knew she didn’t have what it took to do what God wanted her to do. Moses was terrified, he almost peed himself when he went up the mountain. Yes the thunder was deafening and scary (we who are scared of loud noises are a great bunch), but more than that was the dread of leading a multitude through the wilderness to a location unbeknownst to him.
See, whenever God shows you His plans and purposes for your life, I believe one of the first things you’ll feel is fear. Fear because you know you just cannot do it. Everyone God called in scripture demonstrated fear. Fear because you know you just cannot do it. And of course, you cannot do it! The chances of you being able to do what God wants you to do and the same as the chances of a virgin giving birth. In fact, if God tells you to do something and you find it comfortable and easy to do, I doubt it was God who spoke to you.
It is a good thing however, and we must harness the power in that fear. That fear is to make us recognize how dependent we must be on God. As Abraham journeyed through the wilderness, he erected so many altars in different places. He didn’t know where he was going! The uncertainties were 1001. And he was no explorer, just a successful shepherd. He needed God, and God needs us to be in that position so He can accomplish miracles through our lives.
So I’m pretty sure God is scared of heights, and here is why. There is a pattern of being scared about what God would have you do. We all know God is way up there, above the clouds in heaven. I’m guessing the pattern applies to him too and so, the one thing He must be scared of is staying up there with no pillars or trusses! Of course this is cheesy and ridiculous, but please do not miss the message in here. Harness the power of fear, and let it lead to you a place of absolute dependence on God. Then and only then, can God flow through you to do exactly what He wants you to do.
Have a lovely and fruitful week, as you step into the unknown, holding firmly unto God. Many blessings!
